What began as a job installing carpet and flooring became a lesson in how easily labor can be extracted, controlled, and discarded when the person holding the paycheck believes the worker has no power to fight back. The pattern was simple. Work now. Payment later. And when later came, the payment often never did. The promises were always the same: “Payment is coming.” “The client hasn’t paid yet.” “We’ll settle up next week.” But the pattern repeated itself again and again: wages delayed, partial payments, excuses, and many times nothing at all. Over time it became clear that the system was not broken. It was functioning exactly as designed. Labor was extracted first. Payment became optional. The story did not end when the employment ended. After leaving the operation in 2024 and beginning to document what had occurred, retaliation followed.
